in North Texas
There are an estimated 150,000 Muslims living the North Texas area representing over 40 countries. The North Texas Muslim community began in the 1970’s as members of the Nation of Islam switched their beliefs to the religion of Islam under Imam W.D. Muhammad. Major waves of Muslim immigration into North Texas began in the early 1980’s with students and professionals who continue to work hard building their place in the North Texas cultural and religious fabric. The DFW Muslim community currently consists of over 30 mosques, 6 full-time schools, and numerous ethnic restaurants and retail stores.

Demographic Data

The North Texas Muslim community represents a wide variety of nationalities from all over the world. The largest percentages come from the South-Central Asian countries: Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The next largest percentages include African Americans and Arabs.

Since the influx of Muslims in North Texas began in the 70’s and 80’s as college students, the North Texas Muslim community is quite young compared to the average age. According to Allied Media Corp, 67% of the American Muslim population is under age 40 as compared to the total U.S. population being over 40. Also, 67% of American Muslims have a college degree, versus 44% of the general population.

Arabic, Urdu, Farsi, Kenyan, Somali, English, Indonesian, Serbo-Croatian, Turkish, Spanish, and many others.

Employment
Many Muslims are doctors, engineers, business owners, and business professionals.
Religion
Islam is a monotheistic faith from the same prophetic lineage as Christianity and Judaism. The basic tenet of the faith is a belief in one god, Allah, and that Mohammad was the last of the prophets. The holy book is the Qur'an, which Muslims believe to be the verbatim words of God (Allah) revealed through the angel Gabriel to Prophet Mohammad. There are an estimated 1.2 billion Muslims worldwide. Islam is the second largest religion in the world and the fastest growing religion in the United States.
