Serakib Red

Syria traditional clothing dresses folk Serakib Weiss-Armush

Dresses from Serakib in northwestern Syria, Idlib province, are characterized by their large surfaces of principally scarlet red cross stitch embroidery. The seams of these heavy black cotton dresses are overlayed with satin stitch in what may be called 'rainroad pattern.: The motifs are geometrical.

This drawing is by syrian artist Ziad Zokari.

The loose fitting thob is worn over regular clothes when the woman leaves her home, and frequently is worn inside out to protect the heavy embroidery.
